The Schmooze: So it looks like the promotional push for DMB’s new album, Big Whiskey and The Groogrux King, is underway. DMB’s offfical YouTube channel just released this video. Apparently 15 fans managed to get inside the studio in New Orleans and get a preview of the new album. The clip features what is presumably the opening track of the album. Leroi’s beautiful saxophone wail should bring feelings of both sadness and joy to any DMB fan. Sure there are better saxohpone players, but NO ONE had the soul of Leroi. I like what I’m hearing so far.
The Schmooze: To put it simply, a broadband stimulus bill moving through Congress has had language put in, then taken out, but possibly put back in that will allow Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to inspect data transferred between users to check for copyrighted materials. This language, strongly lobbied for by Hollywood, would raise major privacy issues. Additionally, it would significantly weaken the “Fair Use” provision that allows the use of copyrighted works in certain circumstances. Though the most recent version of the bill had the language taken out, this morning the bill is in committee where it could be slipped back in. Some quick schmooze-for-thought: Did you know that President Bush is the 1st American president ever to hold an MBA degree? From Harvard no less! Yes…that Harvard. Given the financial meltdown we are going through…shouldn’t that give the American public some sort of sense of comfort? Or does it just make you question the value of a Harvard degree? I leave it to you to decide.

I saw the Dave Matthews Band open for Phish at the Santa Monica Civic.
I do what Chip tells me. He’d told me I had to come see Phish at the Variety Arts Center and I’d watched them blow up. The DMB was his new band.
I didn’t know that the Santa Monica Civic had a false floor, that it was suspended in such a way that when they started playing “Ants Marching” and the college-aged audience dressed in the same exact clothing as the band members themselves erupted and started moving up and down that the floor would too. I’d never heard the number before, I haven’t forgotten it since.
During the break, before the headliner took the stage, I went with Chip to a side room, just east of the auditorium itself, that resembled nothing so much as an elementary school classroom, to hang out.
