The Schmooze: My two latest domain name acquisitions both went live yesterday. The two sites, SkateboardingEquipment.net and LearnComputerNetworking.com, are WordPress based minisites.

SkateboardingEquipment.net

This name was brought to my attention via Twitter. Among the many people I follow is Bill Eisenmann of Available Domain Names. Usually once a day Bill tweets about his latest list of available domain names. Timing is everything in life and I was fortunate enough to see his tweet, look at the list of available names, and register this name. Now obviously .net is not as strong as the .com, but there are about 49,000 searches a month for the exact phrase “skateboarding equipment.” That is a lot of searches. Also, the .com name is parked and not developed. I’m hoping with my unique content and seo work, SkateboardingEquipment.net will rise to the first page of the search engines. Though the cost-per-click is not particularly high for this niche, the sheer volume of searches will hopefully offset that.

LearnComputerNetworking.com

I purchased this name via one of the domain forums. Though this name is .com, it does not quite have the same positive search metrics as skateboarding equipment. There are apprximately 480 searches a month for the exact phrase “learn computer networking.” Not a lot of searches…but still some. Expanding our point of view a bit, there are 1,900 monthly searches for the phrase “learn computer”, 49,500 for the phrase “computer networking, and 246,000 for “networking.” If, with some good seo work, I can tap into the searches of those other phrases…I’ll be in business. Working very strongly in favor of this name is that the average cost-per-click is around $5. Since the site has been up, I have recieved 3 clicks and already received a 200% return-on-investment! Now if I can reproduce that for about 2,000 other names…

Making The Sites

As stated above, both sites were made on WordPress. I like using WordPress because I am familiar with it and it allows for great customization. The user-friendly interface allows me to track stats, add and delete content, modify visual aspects, and implement ad units.

It is hard to put an exact number on how much time it took to make each site. I usually would spend an hour here and hour there working on them. I would give a very general breakdown of the time as follows:

  • Picking a Wordpress theme - 1 hour
  • Research on keywords - 30 minutes
  • Choosing topics for content - 30 minutes
  • Writing content (sometimes I outsource this) - 2-3 hours
  • Designing and implementing ad units - 15 minutes
  • Altering theme code to perfect look of site - 10 minutes - 1 hour
So there you have it folks. It is not easy, it takes sweat equity; but anyone can do it with some patience and determination.

Taking The Plunge With WhyPark

   Posted by: ZandyMan Tags: , , ,

The Schmooze: So I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and move some of my names over to WhyPark.com. WhyPark seems to offer some pretty good bang for the buck and I’m anxious to see how these names perform now that they’ll have some content behind them. Some of these names get decent traffic, but none of them have succeeded on the monetization front. I’m hoping WhyPark’s easy site building platform will lead to better performance. The names I am experimenting with are:

  • Negligent.net
  • Jurisdiction.net
  • LearnTheLaw.net
  • VegasPokerStore.com
  • MyUltimateVacation.com
  • RadioBroadcasting.org
  • ScienceInstitutes.org
  • Liquor.vg
  • AmericanBirds.net
  • ListedHousing.com
  • WhyPark’s intuitive interface has been very easy to use so far. I did a bulk add when putting the names in and WhyPark automatically detected about 20 keywords related to each name. Then based on these keywords selected several articles from their database to put onto the sites. Instant content. The key is going to be adding my own unique content on a regular basis. The sites are not fancy; but they have nice clean layouts and save me a ton of time I would otherwise be spending setting up wordpress sites…such as the one I did with VinylStorageUnits.com.

    DNSamurai.com Goes Live

       Posted by: ZandyMan Tags: ,

    DNSamurai

    For Immediate Release -

    Washington, D.C. 3/29/2009

ExclusiveDomainListings.com is now DNSamurai.com. DNSamurai.com will continue to bring the market the same great domain names at the same great prices. The only thing that has changed is the name and a cooler logo. When asked about the change, DNSamurai.com owner Alexander Ripps discussed the power of branding:

While Exclusive Domain Listings has been a great success, we saw an opportunity to create a new brand image that will be even more successful. ‘DNSamurai’ is short, easy to say, and most importantly, easy to remember. Our slogan, ‘Honorable prices on memorable names’, reflects our philosophy of working with our customers in a professional and friendly manner to help them acquire the domain name that is right for them at very reasonable prices. If you have established a brand that has gained some cache in the marketplace, that is great. However, this should never stop you from making changes that could lead to even greater success. Of course there will be risks involved; but there are risks involved with any business decisions. The key is to stay positive and really believe in the changes you make. If you believe in it, so will others.

DNSamurai.com sells premium domain names covering a wide variety of categories and niches. Visit DNSamurai.com today to find the domain name that is right for you.

Updating a previous post, today I was very pleased (and somewhat suprised) to see that my site AnatolianLeopard.com is now the #2 website listed on Google for the search phrase: Anatolian Leopard. In first place is Wikipedia…I can live with that :-)  Remember, I spent no more than 3 hours setting up the site and doing a little SEO work. This goes to show that if you can find an untapped niche market, there are still some opportunities out there to get to the top of the search rankings.

    A Couple New Projects

Posted by: ZandyMan Tags: , ,

    Leopard

    Leopard

Got a couple new websites projects I’m working on. The first, FoodandDrink.info, will basically be an online drink recipe guide. I originally was going to do food also…but after a couple days this proved to be a lot more difficult. My goal is to add a few drink recipes everyday until there is a pretty substantial amount of content on there. Once there is a good amount of content, I plan to acquire a better suited domain name…specifically a .com name…and move everything to that site. In theory, any domain name can be made popular and highly ranked…but I’ve decided that .coms are the way to go.

My other new project is AnatolianLeopard.com. What the hell is an Anatolian Leopard and why did I make a site about it? Well, the Anatolian Leopard (I recently came to learn) is a Leopard from Turkey that is critically endangered and possibly extinct. The inspiration for the site came after reading a post on Elliot Silver’s Blog. Basically, the idea is to find an available category-defining domain name (in this case Anatolian Leopards) where this is not a lot of competing websites related to the category. Once you have found such a name, make a basic site, add some conent and see how long it takes to move up the rankings in the various search engines. The goal is to capitalize on a very small niche area. Are millions of people googling “Anatolian Leopard”  every day? Certainly not. But some people are. So with a minimal investment of a registration fee and 4-5 hours to make the site….why not do a little experiment and see if I can get to the top? Now, it might take several months for it to happen. But say it does happen and in a few months my site is on the 1st page when people do a search. Suddenly, my site becomes a lot more valuable. Either way, it is a lot of fun working on the sites and hopefully they might become successful. Rock on!

So I’m thinking of starting my own domain name business. Being your own boss…working on your own schedule…investing in the future….it is all part of the fun. Right now I own about 50 domain names and would love to own and develop several more. The problem is that for every name I own…I have a grand idea about how I would like to develop it. Unfortunately that all requires money and technical expertise I don’t possess. I can dream though right?
