Below is a story from music insider Bob Lefsets. It is an emotional, but great read.
I saw the Dave Matthews Band open for Phish at the Santa Monica Civic.
I do what Chip tells me. He’d told me I had to come see Phish at the Variety Arts Center and I’d watched them blow up. The DMB was his new band.
I didn’t know that the Santa Monica Civic had a false floor, that it was suspended in such a way that when they started playing “Ants Marching” and the college-aged audience dressed in the same exact clothing as the band members themselves erupted and started moving up and down that the floor would too. I’d never heard the number before, I haven’t forgotten it since.
During the break, before the headliner took the stage, I went with Chip to a side room, just east of the auditorium itself, that resembled nothing so much as an elementary school classroom, to hang out. It was there that I met Boyd, Carter and LeRoi. Maybe LeRoi, I can’t remember exactly, it was fifteen years ago… Read the rest of this entry »

After 105,000 miles and about 35 oil changes…it is now time for me to get a new car. Although my car is actually working (2002 Acura RSX-S), I have been faced with the following dilemma: Do I put $3000 (needs a new a/c and cat) into a car that is only worth $9000, or start thinking about investing in something new to last me another 7 years?
I love cars. The way they look…the way they sound…and especially the way they drive. My little Acura has treated me well over the years, and many close to me would agree that it is “my baby”. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end.
So you must be thinking…hey what a fun opportunity it must be to start car searching. Well as often as the case is…the car I love is too much money, and the one I don’t love is ugly. For some, going from point A to B is all that matters, but driving for me is the ultimate nirvana. It surely does not help when my father and I built a weekend racer in a stripped down Mini Cooper S (6pt Harness/Roll Cage/Moton Suspension/Re-Worked Engine…The Real Works!)

I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I love high gas prices because I hate them just as much as the next guy, or middle class family. I, however, believe they are the necessary evil, that by sparking greater demand for fuel efficient vehicles, will ultimately lead to real innovation in, and availability of, alternative fuel cells and renewable energy, and less dependence on foreign oil, which threatens our national security. The auto industry lobbyists were strong enough to fight the big jumps in fleet average mpg’s that were proposed last year citing potential job losses. But when market demand is at the helm and not the legislature, ignoring the demand for more fuel efficient vehicles will come at the peril of the big three US automakers, Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler.
Is it just me, or is this deja vu all over again (I really despise that saying, but here, it works)? I thought I heard the death knell of the SUV last summer when we hit then record highs for gas? We heard stories about how vulnerable GM and Ford were because such a large percentage of their sales were made up of SUV’s and trucks. Here it is a year later, gas is at new record highs, and look who’s caught with their pants down on the playground and still no hybrid compact on the market.
In their defense US automakers have had a knife to their throat in the form of Read the rest of this entry »
